Why lower-priced stocks move quickly

5 minute read

In plain English

Smaller companies usually have fewer shares available to trade, less institutional ownership and thinner order books, so a modest amount of buying or selling moves the price much further.

Why it matters

The same characteristic that produces fast gains produces fast losses, and it makes exits harder exactly when you want one.

Example

A stock trading 300,000 shares on a normal day can move 30% when a few million shares suddenly trade.

Try this

Compare the average volume and float of a small-cap on the Radar with a large, well-known company.

Common mistake

Treating volatility as opportunity without adjusting position size downwards for it.

What this does not mean

Fast movement is not the same as a good opportunity. It is simply more movement, in both directions.
